Since the Brasilian IPC8 I have had the pleasure of visiting Africa two times and touring the countries most closely associated with permaculture development. I have spent some months with the different organizers of IPC9 in person and in conference and am quite confident that all is on track. In fact I am writing this to the Permaculture news list to assure everyone that it will be safe, exciting and most rewarding to attend any and all of the IPC9 events scheduled: including and most especially the international course in Harare, Zimbabwe, the Conference and Convergence in Malawi and the tours. To put it into perspective we should all know that many Africans have been doing permaculture since 1989, and it is with considerable humility that I have learned that in many ways they are far ahead of the rest of the world. So for anyone hesitant to travel to Africa because of all the horrible stories being played out on the front pages of newspapers and television I can tell you there are so many more good stories that you will just have to come and see for yourself. So for those committed to Africa and IPC9 you can really help by buying in as early on as possible to create the financial pool that the organizers absolutely require to put the event on. Its all about cash up front to secure venues, pay for websites, feed staff etc. When you travel to Africa please make sure to fill your gift bags and pockets with heirloom vegetable seeds, permie books, useful magazines and even laptops if you can afford it. For their part, when you leave, the locals will stuff the same pockets and gift bags with inspiration to last you until the days of grey eyebrows.
